Softball Wins One, Loses Two Opening Day

The Temple College Leopards opened up the 2019 season in Galveston at the Galveston College Invitational Tournament with one win and two losses.

The Leopards lost the first game of the day 2-1 to LSU Eunice. Sophomores Lenzi Stewart and Maddie Weatherly each went 1 for 2 with a walk. Temple's only run came in the top of the third when sophomore transfer Mercedes Beltran walked to lead off the inning and was moved into scoring position with a sac bunt by freshman MacKenzie Purcell. With two outs Weatherly singled up the middle to score Beltran from second base. Sophomore transfer Taylor Gruell threw six innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits and took the loss for the Leopards.

The Leopards bounced back in game two against Northwest Florida State College with a 4-2 win. Freshman Savanna Parker was 2 for 4 with a run scored, two RBI, and a homerun. Sophomore Daisy Gonzalez was 2 for 3 with a walk, run scored, two RBI, and a homerun. Sophomore transfer Breanna Hernandez earned the win, allowing seven hits, two runs, and striking out nine.

The Leopards fell in game three 4-2 to Chipola College. Gonzalez was the leading hitter again for the Leopards, going 2 for 3 with a walk and two RBI. The Leopards scored their only two runs in the bottom of the fifth. MacKenzie Purcell walked to lead off the inning follow by an out, a single by Stewart, fielder's choice by Weatherly and another walk by Parker to load the bases. Gonzalez hit a hard shot to score both Stewart and Weatherly to tie the game a two apiece. Chipola answered back with two runs in the sixth. The Leopards threatened in the bottom of the seventh but ended the game with the bases loaded. Hernandez took the loss in relief for the Leopards throwing the final three innings.

The Leopards are 1-2 and will play tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. against Lake Land College and at 3:00 p.m. against University of Houston Victoria in Galveston.
