Region V announced yesterday the Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of December 30 – January 5. The North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Player of the Week is Lady Leopard sophomore Makayla Gatewood.

The 5-10 forward from Killeen (Shoemaker High School) averaged 17 points and 11.3 rebounds in a three-game stretch last week. She recorded two double-doubles with games of 16 points and 12 rebounds (vs. Paris Junior College), and 21 points and 21 rebounds (vs. Victoria College). On the year Gatewood has a total of six double-doubles. Over the three games, she was 21 of 34 from the field (62%) and averaged 2 blocks per game. This is Gatewood's second time to receive Player of the Week honors this season. She also received Player of the Week for October 28-November 3 after starting the season with back to back double-doubles.

Gatewood and the Lady Leopards open up conference play tonight at home at 5:00 p.m. when they host Grayson College.
