Volleyball Picks Up Second Win of Season at Home

TEMPLE, Texas – The Leopards defeated nonconference opponent Frank Phillips College in a match that started hot with the Leopards showing their talent, but Frank Phillips wasn't going to lay down and give up (25-22, 22-25, 27-25, 25-21). The Match went into 4 exciting sets, all close in score, and showed some mental toughness in both teams.  The Leopards are officially 2-5 in their 2022 season.

UP NEXT
The Leopards next match will be their second chance against Wharton County Junior College on Saturday, September 3rd. After losing in three sets to WCJC at their home opener, the leps are out to prove they can handle Wharton and make them earn the next win.

Rachel Melancon, Head Coach Temple College Leopards Volleyball
"For me, this match was one of extreme excitement and extreme disappointment. I saw my athletes play and perform just as expected, but also saw some of our old habits creep in when things got tough. I see these young ladies fight every day to better their physical game and mentality, but when they allow themselves to revert back to their old habits, the game is then out of my control. That is the worst feeling as a coach- I couldn't jump in there and help change their hearts and minds, they had to do it for themselves, and eventually, they did!"

The Leopards have shown much improvement in their serve receive game and volleyball strategy in the quick month they have been playing. At this last match against Frank Phillips, they were also able to show just how physically talented they are on offense.

Kiyah Felder, Leopard of the Match
"To win the game and just remain focused throughout was a huge accomplishment. I feel like we locked in as a team when needed and in the end, stayed disciplined in our skills and techniques. During the game, I was thinking I couldn't be scared to mess up and I need to stop overthinking every ball that comes to me. I've been learning slowly that I can trust myself and if I give the game everything I have, I can help us be successful. A personal and team goal has been our focus and working on not freaking out when the ball is out of control. I felt myself, along with my teammates, touch the ball with purpose and intent. We stayed in the game, played aggressively, and didn't let the pressure get to us- even in the most chaotic situations."

The Leopards seem to be playing more as a team and that shined brightly last night. Every player, on the floor and on the bench, had a role and excelled at it. That is how teams are successful. Lets hope they show the same excitement and drive against Wharton on Saturday.
